It’s another gruelling late afternoon/ early evening of Wimbledon tennis in the middle of summer and you are pretending that the weather is OK, even though it is cold and rain has stopped play, again (thank heaven they can pull the roof over the centre court and the game can carry on!). You are at home watching the tennis. Now is the time to eat something that’s easy to while away all this time during Wimbledon fortnight

Let someone bring this simple (easy to make) food to you; then there will be no need to miss any of the tennis or actually get off the sofa!

Crisps and Cheese Sandwich:
Needed per person:
Two slices of bread (thickly buttered)
Filling:
Packet of Walkers crisps (crushed)
2 ounces of Cheddar Cheese (grated)
Put a very thick layer of grated cheddar cheese on one of the pieces of thickly buttered bread, followed by a thick layer of rough crushed crisps and cover with the other piece of thickly buttered bread and cut into dainty squares. Serve.

Afterwards … Strawberries (only ever sun warmed strawberries!)……

As every one at Wimbledon will be eating strawberries you will want some to, so get a good supply in. Cheap is good! Cold hard strawberries from the store can be turned  into something delicious if warmed…… as if just picked from the field.

Mock Sun-Warmed Strawberries
Items needed:
One Fork
Fresh English Strawberries (or cold, cheap ones (not frozen) from the supermarket).
Large Bowl
Wash strawberries in cold water and drain. Dry with kitchen towel and place them all in the bowl. Put through the microwave for 15 seconds to slightly warm, soften and sweeten. This really works! Or you can cover strawberries in boiling water for a minute to warm them up (and sweeten). Then drain, dry and replace in bowl. Either way you can now pretend the strawberries just came in from the field, sun warmed. Sprinkle strawberries with caster sugar (preferably stored for a day or two in a jar with a vanilla pod). To eat, take turns  to pick up a strawberry with the fork to dip into a bowl of whipped double cream, sprinkled with Muscovado sugar. This can be quite good fun! ( If you are on your own you can eat the lot!)

Burger [delivered]
Andy Warhol  famously said you should live in one room with a bed  and do everything there. So laying around  watching tennis is OK! Arrange a burger delivery and join Andy Warhol eating his burger, in real time, during a tennis break. There is no need to talk but you will need your own  tomato ketchup, any brand.

Time for more food again. These can be made  ready to eat in minutes, to serve on cushions!

Banana on crackers
DSCN4752for one portion
One heaped teaspoon of Dark Muscovado Sugar on three slices of banana on thick butter on one cracker.
Preparation time:Three minutes

A word about Soft Dark Muscovado sugar  It is one of the most important ingredients for cushion/sofa food,so make sure you keep a supply in the cupboard. However it has a natural tendency to go hard and become completely unusable. The packet says ‘In certain weather conditions this natural sugar may harden. This is not a sign of deterioration. Just place the sugar in a basin and cover with a damp cloth. Leave overnight and its moistness will return. The sugar won’t mind’. Yes it really said that!

Oh yes…..and make sure you have something sparkly to drink

Acting Space

I was reading
A Philosophy
By Andy Warhol .…….
Laying on the cushions on my great big sofa
(Which I treat more like a bed).
Not feeling at all lovely
Watching tele
Feeling slummy,
Peeling spuds!
While I read

(Call it multi- tasking!)

And then the master said
It’s glamorous
Living  in one room
With just a bed!
And doing everything there…..

(Call it multi tasking!)

Here’s the actual words he said:
‘Everything is more glamorous when you do it in bed anyway.
Even peeling potatoes’

So with my spuds now ready for the pan
And from……………….my sort of bed
I suddenly felt glamorous
(And ready to act carrots!)  No, no, no!

Philosophy that makes me feel better

The way to carry money……….
Here I am. I have just got back from shopping. I am sitting on the sofa looking at my stuff filled carrier bag. I am in a bit of a fizz, again. The bits I bought are safely in the bottom for sure, but I can only hope the paper money accrued on route ,thrown carelessly in, during frantic purchasing, is still there. I now realize once again that the couple of screwed empty ready salted crisp bags, I also acquired along the way, have unfolded themselves and  and are now floating around in the carrier, big time; and they may have pushed out  any of the  floating money in a flick during my various movements along route! So now I begin my ‘after shopping mantra’ a sort of prayer, about loose paper money which always float at some stage in the carrier bag I will be carrying, quite forgotten, during the various uncomfortable stages of travelling, that is until I get home………
Me:
It is good to carry money
In crumpled wads
In paper bags

….repeated three times during the process of emptying carrier bag.

And so my God gradually answers……..in gentle tones:

‘The best way I like to carry money, actually, is messily.
Crumpled wads.
A paper bag is good’*
Andy Warhol

Feeling better already. Never actually lost anything in a carrier bag.  As far as I know.Gill McGrath©
