If you want them to come back get a thistle seed feeder, fill it up and hang it in the garden. No other birds eat the thistle seeds so they will soon drop by!

It is a goldfinch. It has a red face because it took a seed from the crown of thorns on Christ’s head and got covered in blood. Nice story.
