I was surprised to see these which seem untouched by the birds and all still shiny. Perhaps these will be black and all dried up soon enough although I think birds still eat them even when past their best ! No sign that they are eating them just yet….
Same thing with the elderberries down here – a lot untouched, shrivelled and black – but there are masses of other hips, sloes etc to be had around. Lovely colours!
I always reckon that what ever grows up here is about two or three weeks behind . ..and the. theory seems to be holding up…. I haven’t seen any shrivelled black elderberries just yet, just ripe ones !!
Ah, truly fantastic photos, Gill. That first one of the elderberries is really exquisite: perfect leaves, lovely clarity, and a glint of light on each elderberry.
Are either of those berries/fruits edible? They look tempting.

elderberry is eatable but better made into wine. Hawthorn is more bird food . with a buttery fudge texture. Eatable but not very nice!.

I’ve just seen a load of elderberries this morning that had turned black.
